Writing 101: Day Three: Commit to a writing practice

Write about the three most important songs in your life — what do they mean to you?

Number One:   Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody.  It was mind blowing.  I was only 16 (a late developer) and wasn’t really a great lover of music or for that matter following a band.  At school a couple of the boys introduced me to Queen and I became an ardent fan.

In 1976 Bohemian Rhapsody topped the charts for quite a number of weeks, and as was usual Countdown (Australian TV show) always played what was at the top as their last feature song of the program.  It played for  so many weeks and was such a long song that they tried to cut it off halfway through but the fans complained!   I sat like a zealot watching until the last chord had been sung.  It was ground breaking music and I loved Queen, still do.

Number Two:  Con te partiro  by Andrea Bocelli.  Much later in life I discovered through friends again this wonderful Italian Tenor and this song hit me in the heart and soul.  Such a great song about saying goodbye which is ironic as a lot of people used it as their wedding song (not the best omen).  Still moves me when I hear it today but relaxes me like no other music can.

Number Three could be anything I’ve just heard on the radio ( I told you I’m not a music buff) but one song does come to mind –  “You Sexy Thing” by Hot Chocolate.  It was on the first LP (thats old terms for CD) that I ever had when I was 13 and quite liked the vibe about it.  Later it featured in the movie “The Full Monty” (great movie BTW!!) in a scene when they are lined up at the dole office and the song comes on and they all start practicing their dance moves (still remember that scene).  So funny.

Well that’s my list.  Diverse as it is.  Now I cant get “You Sexy Thing” out of my head which is totally inappropriate in the workplace 😉

  1. First and last – great songs, great memories. I also loved/love Hot Chocolates’ “You Don’t remember me, do you? song, always got me. Second song not familiar with. I haven’t attempted this challenge yet as I can’t settle on only 3 songs, there are like about 300.

  2. I love Bohemian Rhapsody; one of the best songs of all time. Even though I’ve heard it hundreds of times,I still love it. Queen had so much genuine talent wrapped inside an amazing show. I wish I’d seen them live, while Freddy was still alive…dang where’s that time machine!
