Monochrome Madness Week 29 – Mont Saint Michel, Normandy, France

Monochrome is getting into my blood..  I am going through a lot of my travel photos and finding new leases of life in them.  Having said that, this MM entry doesn’t really look much different from the colour version just a bit neater I think but I’ve lost the original so nothing to compare with this week.

The picture I have taken this week was from Mont St Michel, Normandy, France in the abbey at the cloisters.  It looks quite a bit different looking down through the columns as to what it really looked like walking in.  The columns are not as close as the picture would lead you to believe and it is not a walkway.  After coming from some very dark rooms into the open air of the cloisters and the greenery, it was a pleasant sight to behold.  There were a lot of people taking photos and when I turned to look down the columns I had to wait for people to stick their heads and cameras back out to get the shot.  It was a split second shot in an otherwise heavy traffic area.

Mont St Michel is an island just a kilometre off the northwest coast of France. Its population is 44, not counting the hoards of visitors daily.  Such a beautiful place, unfortunately on the day we were there it was wet and windy with some mist so not the best way to see it re photography but still we were there for a short time and had to make the most of it.  The highlight of this island is the abbey.  On the island a small church was built in 709 and through the centuries additions were made to what it is today.  UNESCO has deemed this a world heritage listed site since 1979 and 3 million visitors go through each year.  Its not something you drive past every day.  I found it fascinating and would go back in a heart beat.

The church itself has guided and unguided tours.  Not for the weak of heart or immobile.  There are a LOT of stairs up to the highest part and then of course coming back down.  It took about an hour to tour through the church proper.

Just another beautiful part of France to explore!

  4. Thank you for your beautiful photos. Owing to the fact that my knees would never get me to the top should I ever get to France IRL, I have enjoyed my visit vicariously through you. 😛

    • Thanks Sue! 🙂 I took my sister, who at the time was 69 and dragged her up and down dale in the Church but we both hung onto the rails to get there slowly but surely in the wet slippery conditions. Happy to share snippets of France with anyone that will look so always appreciate you stopping by.

  5. I was lucky enough to visit this amazing place back in 2004. Breathtaking! And I vividly remember the cloisters – your description is perfect. Thanks for the revisit through your wonderful photos, Karen. You’re doing B&W (and, as always, color) proud 😀
