One of my last trips during my stay in South Australia was a day trip to Kangaroo Island. It was a very long day starting out at 6:30am to catch a bus down to Cape Jervis to catch the Ferry over to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island.
It was a beautiful sunny day, the ferry was full and about half way through I noticed a few people looking down at the bow of the boat with camera’s in hand. I went over to find two dolphins playing in the Jetstream of the water. I quickly took out my camera and crossed my fingers that I could work the movie feature and starting filming the dolphins. If this was the only thing that happened all day then it was a great day!
Dolphins at play – Kangaroo Island Ferry
Our first stop was Seal Bay and we were not disappointed, it was loaded with seals. A ranger had to escort us down to the beach.
We were warned not to get between a seal and the water at which time they might attack, otherwise were completely harmless to us! We kept an eye on the grass hills just in case..
We were met by quite a lot of lazy seals lying in the sun resting or feeding their young. We all thought what a lazy animal but were then told that they spend days at sea finding food and come back exhausted for a day feeding their young and then went back out again. Not the life I would choose.
Seal Bay is on a wild and woolly looking coastline with strong winds carving out the rocks. Nature at its best.
Next up Remarkable Rock and Admirals Arch.

Oh wow, what an amazing day, I love the seals, what lens did you use Kaz. The dolphins were brilliant too, I’ve never seen dolphins in the wild either, perhaps because I don’t go on boats much.

Thanks Leanne it was a fantastic day. I used mostly my 18-200mm kit lens at Seal Bay. The dolphins were icing on the cake before the trip even started I was so happy I could capture them. 🙂

Wow Kaz, great photos as usual. I was just uploading some photos for my Aussie Day post and have included one from Seal Bay. It is a pretty poor photo compared with yours, but I took it more than 10 years ago now (wow time flies) 🙂
Would love to go back now that I mostly know what I’m doing.
I am loving your photographic journey through our country 🙂

Thanks so much Desley. I feel the same way about a lot of places I have already been. I need to go back, spend more time and take photos now I know to put the camera right way up lol! But I would definitely like to go back to Kangaroo Island that’s for sure and spend a few days 🙂

Your welcome. I do hope you get to go there. I would love to go back and spend more time. I didn’t realise how big the island was but its at least 100km long and on a bus it took a while to get around to each place but time well spent 🙂
